Gratitude and Thanksgiving

The first ever unofficial Thanksgiving is known to have taken place in 1621, as the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast and thanked God for their bountiful blessings. The years that would follow saw many such feasts of gratitude and celebration in the colonies at different times and locations by various groups. But it was not until Abraham Lincolnís 1863 proclamation that Thanksgiving became an official holiday celebrated at the same time by everyone in the United States. (more…)

Is Abortion Really Wrong?

There’s no doubt, one of today’s most polarizing issues is abortion. The two sides of the abortion issue have never been further apart. While the folks on the one side of the issue keep pressing for personal liberty at all cost and blame religion for attempting to trample on those freedoms, the folks on the other side stare blindly at the radicalization of the self over against what appears to be an intuitively basic knowledge that life is to be protected. Many in this camp will say that we can know that abortion is wrong simply through our intuition, and while this may ultimately be true, it does no work in resolving the issue as a matter of an objective moral law or public policy because it is unable to bridge the gap between the two sides.

Now, it should first be noted that the issue of whether or not abortion is morally permissible is not necessarily a religious one. Though there are obvious religious insights that can help us navigate the difficult issue, we can actually arrive at a logically sound conclusion about what side of the argument is more valid by simply examining the issue in some depth without the aid of religion. So, it is especially fruitful to find arguments based on the common shared experience of simply being human and thinking logically within a moral landscape.

So then, which position is more valid and why? Should personal choice triumph? Should life be spared at all cost? When is it permissible to end a human life? If I may put it more bluntly, when is it permissible to kill a human being? (more…)

Was Adolf Hitler a Better Man than Martin Luther King, Jr.?

Sometimes no greater point can be made than by comparing polar opposites. And, however ugly that comparison may appear, if to serve a greater purpose of clarifying greater truths, it is well worth the inquiry. Perhaps no two people in the history of the world have been separated by such a gulf of difference than Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Adolf Hitler. Devoid of a conscience (or violator of it), Hitler left one of history‚Äôs most indelible marks of devastation, inhumane mass exterminations and a war campaign that would see the entire world unravel, causing up to 40,000,000 deaths. Dr. King, appealing to the conscience of a nation, opened the eyes of that nation to show it its blatant hypocrisy. One found it permissible, and even his right, to exact force and eradicate what he deemed to be the lower races. The other, persisting in peace against a horrid injustice and blatant hatred, to free millions from their bondage. One would hold that the Arian race was supreme, and therefore needed to exterminate all undesirables. The other preached the table of brotherhood. One judged by the color of the skin. The other, by the content of the character. One, is notably the most evil person to ever live. The other, one of the noblest characters (though definitely not perfect in any sense) to ever set foot on this earth. (more…)

Christmas and its Implications

On the occasion of Christmas and the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ (God incarnate), it is appropriate to consider the following insightful commentary from Harry Reasoner from  Christmas Eve of 1973,

“Christmas is such a unique idea that most non-Christians accept it, and I think sometimes envy it. If Christmas is the anniversary of the appearance of the Lord of the Universe in the form of a helpless baby, it’s quite a day. It’s a startling idea, and the theologians, who sometimes love logic more than they love God, find it uncomfortable. But if God did do it, He had a tremendous insight. (more…)

Can There Be Virtues Without God?

It would be fair to admonish the young people of today for being vain, selfish, and simply swimming in the enchantment of illusions of their own making. It would be fair to criticize the youth of the day for rebelling against everything, regardless of merit or warrant, in the final analysis slowly fading the issues of rebellion into the backdrop making rebellion itself the chief end. But along with so much chaos among the youth, there are young people today who care deeply about the issues humanity is wrestling with and there is a sense of great optimism about the progress of humankind in its elusive journey to find itself, its ultimate purpose and destiny. Some of the young people today also care about world peace, ending hunger, selfless devotion to one another and deep lasting friendships that are hard to tear apart. The youth of today likes to decorate reality with great and wonderful pursuits, and for this there should be a true sense of elation, for these are the truly meaningful ends. (more…)

What is Halloween?

No other holiday incites the imaginations of kids and adults alike as much as Halloween. But what inspires people of all ages to dress up in various kinds of costumes to go out collecting all sorts of sweet goodies from door to door? Now, it’s a bit of an oddity to tell kids not to take anything from strangers the entire year, and then on this one occasion scrap it all and allow them to take potentially harmful edibles from strangers, most of whom they will not see again for an entire year till next Halloween. Somehow it’s become acceptable to make an exception this one day out of the entire year. But besides this obvious inconsistency, one wonders still how this peculiar tradition came about. What is Halloween? How did Halloween begin? (more…)

Is Jesus Christ Coming Back on October 21, 2011

Does the Bible really say that Jesus Christ is coming back to judge the world on October 21, 2011? Well, Harold Camping is at it again predicting now that the world will face final judgement on October 21, 2011 as Jesus Christ comes back to judge the world. Now, many people have short memories and, therefore, have already forgotten about the fact that Camping has been proven wrong on more than one occasion, the latest one being the failed prediction of May 21, 2011. Joe Wright Kansas Senate Prayer

This prayer was delivered on January 23, 1996 by the Rev. Joe Wright in Kansas. It was said that most of those in attendance were outraged and some walked out. Without a doubt, it is a blunt and direct indictment on modern culture. ¬†Within just a few weeks, the Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, received thousand of phone calls. Surprisingly, only a few dozen of those calls were from those who were responding negatively. In the weeks to follow the church received international requests for copies of this prayer from all over the world. (more…)

Fallout from Judgement Day Prediction

Well, another prediction has failed about Christ’s second coming, which was dated to May 21, 2011. Another prophesy has been shown to be false, made by Harold Camping, a man notorious for false prophesies. As the world awakes on May 22, we need to consider the implications of this false prophesy made by this false prophet, and others like him. It should, therefore, be very valuable to consider how each group of people should proceed to live lives in accordance to reality.

Update: Harold Camping has predicted a new date for the return of Jesus Christ of October 21, 2011.

To Christians Who Believed Harold Camping’s Prophesy:

First and foremost, a gentle ‘I told you so!’ is in order (read this article I wrote months ago about why Christ will not come back on May 21, 2011). Second, did you know that in OT times when prophets were proven wrong they were stoned to death? Why such harshness for mere teaching? Because if one were thought to speak for God and later proven wrong, he would be seen as a heretic of the highest order. The Bible communicates that teachers will be judged harshly because they have the capability to lead people astray from the truth. (more…)

Is Jesus Christ Coming Back on May 21, 2011?

If you’ve seen the billboards around town headlined with, “We Can Know…” or “Save the Date…” with a statement, “Return of Christ May 21, 2011,” you’ve probably been a little puzzled. What is this? Is this serious? Does the Bible really say Jesus Christ is coming back to judge the world on May 21, 2011? If you ask the organizer of this movement, Harold Camping, you will hear him say it is a certainty. Where does he get this information? Has he gleaned it from some supernatural experience? Has God told him personally? Does the Bible say this?

Read about the fallout from Harold Camping’s failed prediction.¬†and his new prediction for the coming of Jesus Christ on October 21, 2011.

First, let’s see what Harold Camping got right. The Bible does communicate that Christ will come back to judge the world. OK, we’re done. This is the extent of what is true in this sensationalistic phenomenon. But Camping is no stranger to failed predictions. He claimed the same failed prediction for September 6, 1994 in his book titled 1994. After the failure he simply claimed that he had done the math wrong. And what was this math that supposedly gave him this insight? He took the 2,000 pigs from Mark 5:13 that have absolutely nothing to do with years, and supposes them to represent years, then added 2,000 years to Christ’s birth, which he believes to be 7 BC and he came up with 1994. With regard to where we are now, we have the world ending and Christ coming back in 2011, 2012, 2014 as postulated by various false prophets.
