The 3 Questions to Ask Every Bible Passage

The Three Questions

Every time you read a Bible passage, ask:

  1. What does it say? (Observation)
  2. What does it mean? (Interpretation)
  3. What does it mean for me? (Application)

These questions move you from reading words to understanding truth to living differently.

Question 1: What Does It Say? (Observation)

Goal: Understand the basic facts of the passage.

Ask:

  • What’s happening in this passage?
  • Who’s involved? (People, places, events)
  • What words or phrases are repeated?
  • Are there any commands, promises, or warnings?
  • What’s the mood or tone?

Example: John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Observations:

  • God loves the world
  • He gave His Son
  • Belief in the Son prevents perishing
  • Result is eternal life
  • “Whoever” means it’s open to anyone

Don’t skip this step. You can’t interpret what you haven’t carefully observed.

Question 2: What Does It Mean? (Interpretation)

Goal: Understand what the passage meant to the original audience and what it teaches about God.

Ask:

  • What’s the author’s main point?
  • How does this fit the surrounding context?
  • What does this teach about God’s character?
  • What does this teach about humanity?
  • Are there any cross-references to help explain this?

Example: John 3:16

Interpretation:

  • God’s love is the motivation for salvation
  • Jesus’s death was the cost of that love
  • Salvation requires belief/trust in Jesus
  • The alternative to belief is perishing (judgment)
  • Eternal life is the outcome of faith
  • This isn’t limited to Jews—”whoever” includes all people

This is where context and genre matter. Use what you learned in previous sections.

Question 3: What Does It Mean for Me? (Application)

Goal: Let the passage change how you think and live.

Ask:

  • Is there a command to obey?
  • Is there a promise to trust?
  • Is there a sin to confess or avoid?
  • Is there an example to follow?
  • Is there a truth about God to believe?
  • What specific action should I take?

Example: John 3:16

Application:

  • I need to trust in Jesus, not my own goodness
  • God’s love for me isn’t based on my performance
  • I should share this good news with others
  • I can rest in the security of eternal life
  • I should thank God for His incredible gift

Make it specific. “Be more loving” is vague. “Text my friend who’s struggling to encourage them” is actionable.

WHAT IF I DON’T UNDERSTAND A PASSAGE?

Not every passage will be immediately clear. When you’re confused:

  1. Reread it slowly
  2. Check the surrounding verses for context
  3. Look up the passage in a study Bible or commentary
  4. Ask a mature Christian for help
  5. Move on and come back later—understanding grows with time

Don’t let confusion stop you. Keep reading.

Worked Example: Romans 12:1-2

Let’s walk through the three questions together.

The Passage: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Question 1: What Does It Say?

Observations:

  • Paul is appealing based on God’s mercies
  • Command: present your bodies as a living sacrifice
  • This is described as spiritual worship
  • Two more commands: don’t conform to the world, be transformed
  • Transformation happens through mind renewal
  • Result: you’ll discern God’s will

Question 2: What Does It Mean?

Interpretation:

  • “Therefore” connects to Romans 1-11 (God’s mercy in salvation)
  • Living sacrifice = giving your whole life to God while still alive
  • Spiritual worship = everyday obedience, not just Sunday rituals
  • World’s pattern = cultural values opposed to God
  • Transformation requires changing how you think
  • Knowing God’s will comes from renewed thinking aligned with Scripture

Context: After 11 chapters explaining salvation by grace, Paul now explains how saved people should live.

Question 3: What Does It Mean for Me?

Application:

  • I should offer my whole life to God in gratitude for salvation
  • My daily choices are worship—work, relationships, decisions
  • I need to identify ways I’m conforming to culture instead of Scripture
  • I should fill my mind with God’s Word, not just worldly thinking
  • Specific action: Spend less time on social media, more in Scripture
  • Ask: “Does this thought align with God’s truth or the world’s lies?”

Common Application Mistakes

Mistake 1: Skipping observation and interpretation Jumping straight to application without understanding the passage leads to misapplication.

Mistake 2: Generic applications “Be more faithful” is too vague. “Pray for 5 minutes before bed” is specific and doable.

Mistake 3: Applying cultural commands universally Not every instruction in the Bible applies directly to you. Commands to Israel about land, or to specific churches about specific issues, may have principles that apply without exact duplication.

Mistake 4: Never applying anything Knowledge without action is useless. James 1:22 says, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

Making It Practical

Use a notebook or journal:

  • Write the passage reference
  • Write observations
  • Write interpretation
  • Write specific application

Or use a simple format:

  • Passage: John 3:16
  • One thing I learned about God: His love motivated salvation
  • One thing I learned about myself: I need to trust Jesus
  • One thing I’ll do today: Share the gospel with my coworker

Keep it simple. The goal is understanding and obedience, not perfect analysis.
